A man accused of fatally shooting a rookie Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper and injuring another appeared to have accepted a plea deal that could eventually allow him to see life outside of prison.
Edenhofer was hired in September after serving in the U. Navy and was in his final days of training. According to court documents, King appeared to have signed two plea deals wherein he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and aggravated assault.
Trooper Sean Rodecap, whose gun authorities said King managed to take, was also shot but ultimately survived his injuries. According to the agreements, King would serve 25 years for the second-degree murder charge — the maximum sentence for such a charge under most circumstances — and 10 and a half years for the aggravated assault charge to be served consecutively for a total of 35 and a half years.
King would be credited for the over six years he has spent in jail. Edenhofer and Rodecap, his field training officer, told DPS dispatchers at p. Callers told dispatchers that a white man in pink shorts was throwing rocks at passing cars. Another caller reported that someone had shattered their car window with a rock, DPS said. A probable cause statement included in court documents provided little explanation of how King was able to gain control of Rodecap's gun. Trooper Dalin Dorris arrived at milepost at a.
Dorris called for backup a minute later. The statement did not say what prompted Dorris to call for additional help. Edenhofer and Rodecap arrived at p. During the struggle, authorities said King somehow managed to take control of Rodecap's gun.
