Home to a landscape of rolling hills, green pastures and sandy beaches, Normandy is a wonderful region for a French trip as a couple, or with family and friends. Normandy has become synonymous with the Second World War, and history aficionados have long flocked to its museums and memorials. Famed for its marvellous tapestry, Bayeux also features the largest British Commonwealth wartime cemetery in France.
The 80km of coastline used in the D-Day Landings are perhaps best explored with an expert guide — although many of the fishing villages are lovely for a history-minded wander and seafood lunch, too.
The region has also been inspiring artists for centuries. The Impressionists were fascinated by the light in coastal Honfleur , a fantastic seaside destination, and Claude Monet lived for decades in Giverny. His house and gardens now play host to the excellent Monet Foundation.
Charming Etretat , too, has impressive artistic connections. A collection of four striking mansions set in picturesque Normandy countryside. Interiors are traditional yet unfussy with exposed beams and stonework, open fireplaces and antiques. Superb classic Norman cuisine is served in the atmospheric restaurant and there's plenty to explore within the region.
A charismatic hotel in the centre of Bayeux. This quiet and spacious house dates back to the 18th century and still keeps its original style. Featuring period living rooms, tapestries and comfortable bedrooms with traditional woodwork, this is a great choice for an authentic stay. A charming country house set within a 17th-century hamlet surrounded by woodlands. Beautifully converted rooms feature exposed beams and simple rustic furniture set against whitewashed walls.
