Billie Eilish and Green Day kicked off FireAid, a concert benefiting victims of the devastating fires which afflicted Los Angeles earlier this month, on a night where Lady Gaga closed it out with a powerful performance. Numerous blazes broke out across the region at the start of the month, tearing through thousands of acres and destroying businesses and the homes of longtime residents and celebrities alike.
While the fires are largely contained now, the road to recovery for many is only now just beginning. The world of music has now come together to lift spirits and raise money for those impacted with a night of songs. Eilish and Green Day are just two of the big names scheduled to perform this evening, with Lady Gaga and Stevie Wonder among the other megastars.
Unlike any other performer she concluded her short set by singing an original song - presumably called Time - written 'only for tonight' by her and fiance Michael Polansky with the aim of spreading a hopeful message. After the opening performance, Billy Crystal appeared on stage to recall the harrowing tale of losing his home in the Palisades fire , fleeing the home with the clothes he was wearing on stage, and his emotional return to his burnt down property.
The next performer was Anderson. They brought up surprise performer, Dr. Dre, for Still D. The next band Dawes were introduced by a family who lost their homes in the fires, and they kicked off their set with Time Spent in Los Angeles.
The musical group has deep ties to the tragedy - the band's drummer, Griffin Goldsmith, lost his home in the Eaton fire. The home belonging to his brother, Dawes singer Taylor Goldsmith, was also partially burned down in the fire.
