A year-old Florida man and his year-old mistress have been charged with hiring a hitman to kill the male suspect's wife and make it look like a botched burglary. Jacksonville Sheriff's Lt. According to Love, Burns allegedly promised the hired killer an unspecified sum of money after the murder was completed. The payout was to come from his wife's life insurance policy. Burns was working in Tallahassee, about miles west of Jacksonville, at the time of his wife's violent death. A friend who found Velvet Burns' body said when Jerry returned home from work, he dropped to his knees and appeared inconsolable pictured together in Dollywood.
Velvet and Jerry Burns have a son, who had recently gotten engaged, and a daughter, who had just graduated from college last month. Velvet's best friend, Crystal Strickland, who found her body covered in blood on the floor of her master bedroom and called , told News4Jax that when Jerry Burns returned home that afternoon, he appeared inconsolable. In the course of the month-long investigation, detectives reportedly found property belonging to Velvet Burns in Love's possession, and were able to establish that she was near the crime scene on the morning of the murder.
Strickland said Velvet and Jerry Burns had been together for 27 years. They have a son, who had recently gotten engaged, and a daughter, who had just graduated from college last month.
