While he is forever linked to his native England, his plays often take place in far-flung locals throughout Europe and, indeed, explore history both past and present. The Taming of the Shrew is structured around the actions of two couples and set in the city of Padua sometime during the Italian Renaissance.
Bianca is the youngest of the two daughters of Baptista Minola, a wealthy man; she has many suitors who attempt to court her but they are all rejected by Baptista, because he stubbornly wants to find a husband for his eldest daughter, Katherina, first.
Until she has been taken as a bride, Bianca has no choice but to remain as a maiden. This is where our boisterous and self-confident Petruchio comes in. Though she initially resists, he eventually marries and subdues her through methods of psychological torment including withholding food and drink until she becomes a compliant and submissive companion.
By the end of the play, there are three new married couples; the men marvel at the fact that Kate appears to be the most obedient amongst their wives. The induction is set in the English countryside, but the rest of the play takes place in Padua and Verona.
The Renaissance also brought about a revival of music which was often used to accompany stage plays. While we have the plays themselves, regrettably, the music that went along with the elaborate staging for Taming of the Shrew was never recorded. The most iconic rendition, however, is the version starring Elizabeth Taylor as Kate, and her then-husband, Richard Burton, as Petruchio.
