My mother, in her mid-fifties, went on Atkins with my father when he was diagnosed as diabetic. Atkins was quite bad for her cholesterol level, something to keep in mind when consulting a doctor. Your mother had an unusual experience. I think that Atkins can be done in a way that is, at least, less dangerous to cholesterol levels than one might think. A few years back, when the diet was first gaining publicity, it was being sold by at least some journalists as a way to lose weight by eating all the butter, cheese, and meat that you want.
