Drinking and smoking cigarettes and cooking up some macaroni and cheese , they recount their misadventures at a recent film festival.
At the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, to be precise. This post-mortem is a framing device; the bulk of the film comprises extended flashbacks from the fest itself.
Embarrassments abound. But the movie is also about dysfunctional camaraderie and people behaving like idiots. Reached by email, Letourneur told me she had won prize money at a previous film fest a couple of months before she was scheduled to attend Locarno.
She plays a version of herself, a striking woman also named Sophie who has perpetually tousled hair, luggage that consists of two overstuffed tote bags and a wonky internal compass that has her obsessed with the French actor and filmmaker Louis Garrel best known in the U. He is the elusive fantasy figure she pursues, like a metaphor for the emotional validation that always seems out of reach at these gatherings.
She is accompanied at Locarno by her two close friends, Camille Camille Genaud, at once daffy and heartbreaking in her pursuit of a fellow fest attendee named Martin and Carole Carole Le Page, sleek but sex-deprived and focused on getting some action. Together they form a screwball trio, lurching from party to screening to groggy morning-afters. I prefer accuracy. Comedy is a story of rhythm, like a song, and so I write it before.
