Finally, after a week that felt like a month, Borussia Dortmund have taken their next steps. Niko Kovac has been appointed head coach until and is charged with leading an ailing team β 11th in the Bundesliga β back up the table towards the Champions League qualification places.
Kovac, 53, emerged as a target early. Roger Schmidt was also on the shortlist but is taking a break from coaching. Ralf Rangnick was another target, but no offer was made or rejected, and no agreement ever seemed realistic. Initially, Dortmund intended to appoint an interim coach until the end of the season. That proved a sticking point for Kovac, who was not keen on a short-term contract.
Ultimately, the two parties agreed on an month deal until , with no break clause in the summer. And in replacing Sahin, Kovac is really a departure for the club. He neither played for Dortmund nor, in tactical terms, does he preach their kind of football. He is more pragmatic. He places more emphasis on defence. He has coached in different ways across his career β at Eintracht Frankfurt , Bayern Munich , Monaco, Wolfsburg and with the Croatia national team β but his approach has never made him an obvious candidate for this job.
That might prove an advantage, because the main task is to make this team more realistic in its stylistic aims. That is to their detriment. Dortmund want to be what they were: powerful, dynamic, stronger than the sum of their parts.
But the harder they try to recapture that moment in time, the further away they seem to get. BVB were once the European system team: an ultimate underdog, of sorts. Sahin played for the club and grew up supporting them.
