We attempted to watch the sunrise from the ferry but it was too cloudy. They had a separate house for us to stay in that belonged to an Uncle who lives in New Zealand. After we had settled in we went up to the house where Walter had cooked us a feast of bambacow, Fijian pancakes, and what I would call traditional American pancakes but the dough was loaded with honey.
They reminded me a lot of my grandparents, the sweetest loving people who just want to spoil you. Walter is a Kailoma, which literally means contaminated.
His dad was from England and married his Fijian mom who is still alive and 99 years old! He practically raised himself and worked in the logging company until he was 18 when he went to Suva to build the harbor that still stands today.
He met Emma at a club there and brought her back to Savusavu to marry her. He also spent some time in the gold mines in Latoka. The men of the family with the exception of Johnny have had a problem spreading their seed though having kids with multiple women very un-Walter.
It is crazy to think how they got to be like that after being raised in that home. Dale is the daughter who we would end up spending time with in Taveuni and she married Adrian a white man who owned a coconut plantation, he was actually older than Walter was and the marriage was arranged. Irene, the other sister still lives in Savusavu and her husband drove us to Lambasa when we flew to Nadi on our last day in Fiji.
