A risk coefficient may be interpreted either as the average risk per unit exposure for persons exposed throughout life to a constant activity concentration of a radionuclide in an environmental medium, or as the average risk per unit exposure for persons exposed for a brief period to the radionuclide in an environmental medium. The risk coefficients given in this document apply to populations that approximate the age, gender, and mortality experience characterized by the U.
