I'm house shopping and wondering if anyone here has experience installing central air conditioning. It's my understanding that having the duct work in place makes the job less intense, but I'm wondering if roofing needs to be removed to install the unit that goes in the attic. I know it's not your question but do you think you'll need central air? I was concerned about not having it in my apartment it has a "through the wall" hotel type window unit in the living room when I moved here, but I've found I actually use it about days a year.
Otherwise, windows open and fans seem to do fine around here. And I've found during heat waves, it is super dry outside, so the window unit tends to cool down the living room very quickly. Asmordean - If it were up to me, I would skimp just like you and save the money. I'm still wondering how they fit the unit in these tiny tract ranch home attics and if you basically have to do it when roof boards are off.
It really depends on your set-up. I've had a problem with the fan the thing that blows the hot or cold air thru the ducts for a couple of years. I finally had somebody come out and look. Considering my heater was over 30 years old and it was a cheap piece-o-crap heater when it was new, I decided to replace the heater.
The new condenser box has an access door so that it can be cleaned out annually. Lastly, you should have them inspect the ducts for good seal. Air conditioning is best installed outside, either on the roof or next to the house for noise and maintenance reasons.
