The study highlights incidents such as the Ethiopian Airlines Flight crash and the importance of preventive measures against foreign object debris FOD , while laying out essential components for maintaining safety and improving emergency response in the aviation sector. Runway excursion RE is a significant cause of many aircraft accidents worldwide.
Statistics reveals that accident associated with RE is on the increase around the world. Although RE accident fatalities are usually lower with respect to loss of control LOC caused accidents, however the aircrafts involved in RE caused accidents are usually write-offs in most cases. The study gathered three kinds of secondary information associated with RE accidents: 1 statistical summaries, 2 accident report that cited runway excursion accident and 3 stakeholders inputs.
Using this resources, the RE causal factors were identified, review of related literature; main identified causal factors for RE caused accidents and potential measures and recommendations provided as strategic prevention approach. Landing and takeoff overruns, undershoots, and veer-offs account for most of the accidents that occur on or in the immediate vicinity of the runway.
Although in many cases the causal factors involve some type of human error, the conditions at the airport may contribute significantly to the probability and severity of the accidents. The purpose of this study was to collect the data of runway excursion accidents and find out the reason how and why they happen. We have mainly focus on contamination of runway. When Aerodrome Obstacle Standards cannot be met as a result of urban or technical development, EASA in-line with ICAO allows proving an equivalent level of safety by carrying out an aeronautical study.
