In September, the federal government hosted a National Roundtable on Online Dating Safety, asking app developers to be stricter when dealing with problematic behaviours. During the roundtable, the government asked online dating companies to work more closely with law enforcement, improve their safety policies, and be more transparent about any potential harmful effects on users.
The government also said it would consider potential changes to the law if the companies did not improve user safety on online dating services. Users themselves may also have more power than they realise, with app companies urging them to report any negative experiences so poor behaviour can be addressed.
So, on this Dating Sunday, new-year's lovers are encouraged to stand up for themselves while swiping right. The number of messages sent was 14 per cent above the usual daily average on the Sunday after the New Year, known as "Dating Sunday". Bumble's Asia-Pacific communications director, Lucille McCart, said it was important for users to take steps to help stamp out bad behaviour β from online abuse, being stood up, or being "ghosted".
