The David Cameron Award is given in recognition of outstanding achievement in historic preservation over a period of time. He prepared the Historic Structures Report and ensured that the highest level of historic preservation standards were utilized so that the project can serve as a model. His dedication, experience and ability to find solutions have guided and strengthened the Santa Monica Conservancy for many years. Due to extraordinary dedication and hard work, this fragment of an original Indigenous Tongva village has been preserved, restored, and revitalized to honor their ancestors and to educate the public about their culture.
The City of Santa Monica is connected to this site, located behind University High School, because our name and our first water supply originated from there. The Kuruvungna Springs and the first contact between Natives and Spanish colonizers is depicted in our City Hall murals.
Abandoned and neglected for years, descendants and volunteers initiated a campaign in the early s to preserve the site, and began its cleanup and restoration. They formed a foundation, secured legislative support, and became a recognized historic site.
