That year, he was appointed an Additional Solicitor General of India , a role he held until his appointment as a Judge.
During this time, he was also Director of the Maharashtra Judicial Academy. On 17 October , he was nominated the chief justice of India designate and after the retirement of the then chief justice, Uday Umesh Lalit , he was sworn in as the 50th chief justice of India on 9 November Apart from his judicial service, Justice Chandrachud was also a visiting professor of comparative constitutional law at the University of Mumbai and University of Oklahoma College of Law in the United States.
