Held in Magdeburg city cathedral, mourners gathered to pay tribute to the four adults and one child who have been confirmed dead.
More than people have been injured with about 40 in a critical condition. Olaf Scholz, the German chancellor and Nancy Faeser, the interior minister, are present at the cathedral.
The German government has refused to confirm if Saudi Arabia warned them about the suspect who would go on to conduct the Christmas market attack. A spokesman of the German interior ministry said they could not comment at this stage of the investigations. According to Der Spiegel information, three warnings from Saudi Arabia about Taleb A were issued to German security authorities in the recent past.
The specific content of the warnings is still unclear. A Saudi source told Reuters that Saudi Arabia had warned German authorities about the attacker after he posted extremist views on his personal X account that threatened peace and security.
