Originally named Serra Leoa Portuguese for 'lioness mountains' by Portuguese explorer Pedro de Sintra in , the modern name is derived from the Venetian spelling, which was introduced by Venetian explorer Alvise Cadamosto and subsequently adopted by other European mapmakers.
